Receiving a diagnosis for your child is a milestone that comes with a mix of emotions - relief, overwhelm, and perhaps a bit of fear about the road ahead. At Monarch House, we often tell parents: The diagnosis hasn’t changed who your child is; it has simply given us the map to help them thrive.
You are likely the expert on your child. We are the experts on autism. Together, we can build a future where your child feels safe, supported, and celebrated.
Here is your practical, step-by-step roadmap for navigating the days following a diagnosis.
The moment you receive the diagnostic report, create a digital and physical folder. You will need these documents repeatedly to access support in Ontario.
We don't encourage families to start therapy early to add more to your plate. We do it because of brain plasticity. An autistic child’s brain is at its most adaptable during the early years. Starting therapy now builds the neural pathways they will need for a lifetime of independence. Think of early support like compounding interest: building foundational communication and regulation skills today makes every future milestone significantly easier to reach.
Even if you are waiting for government funding, starting with just a few hours of targeted support now can lead to a much higher "return" on every therapy hour your child receives in the future.
Many parents spend their weeks as "project managers," driving to an SLP in one suburb and an OT in another. This is exhausting for you and fragmented for your child.
At Monarch House, we use an Integrated Service Team. This means your Registered Behaviour Analyst (RBA), Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP), and Occupational Therapist (OT) all work under one roof. They don't just work in the same building; they talk to each other. If your child makes a breakthrough in communication with their SLP, our OT and BCBA know about it within the hour and can reinforce that skill in their own sessions.
We also have licensed mental health professionals to help you deal with the emotions of receiving the diagnosis and building resilience.
In the clinical world, it’s easy to focus on what a child can’t do. At Monarch House, we use a strength-based framework called the F-Words:
By focusing on these, we ensure your autistic child isn't treated as a "case to be managed," but as a person with a bright future.
While you wait for your first intake meeting, you can start reducing daily stress at home by introducing predictability. Most autistic children thrive when they know exactly what is coming next. If bedtime is a struggle, create a simple Visual Schedule. Use three pictures or drawings:

Post this in the hallway. Instead of "telling" your child it's bedtime, use the schedule to add predictability and meaning to words. This small shift reduces the "demand" on their brain and helps them feel in control of their environment.
You don't have to have all the answers today. You just need a partner who understands the journey.
